The Fringes of Power
Overview: At the outset of the Second World War, John Colville, then a diplomat, was sent from the Foreign Office to Number 10 Downing Street. For nine of the next sixteen years, he served three prime ministers, much of that time as private secretary to Winston Churchill. At Churchill's side during the war, Colville experienced the defeat of France, the Battle of Britain, and the turn of Allied fortunes in North Africa and then in Europe. His account takes us to the Central War Room and Chequers, where late at night Colville listened to Churchill's private conversations with his closest wartime aides, General Ismay, Brendan Bracken, Lord Cherwell, Beaverbrook, and other British civilian and military leaders.
